Welcome to Kilbeg House Garden: The Terrace

August 2021

We knew we were going to have to do something with the terrace on the south side of the house, but it was not at the top of our priority list. However as other jobs neared completion, it became obvious that the terrace was letting us down. It had cracked in several places and was gradually falling towards the sea, and the planting was out of control. We had already had a couple of conifers taken out that had grown far too big and were blocking our view. Japanese anemones and Lysimachia threatened to take over other areas. We could either try and patch it up, or start again.

We had already thought of pushing the terrace out towards the sea in front of the conservatory, as in the prow of a ship, and we needed wider steps in front of the doors, as there was very little space to get on to the terrace when the doors were open. Lots of arm-waving and sketching later, and Andrew came up with a design to completely transform the area, allowing for better seating space and for a lot more planting. Part of the project was also to construct a kitchen garden adjacent to the house, to start with primarily for fruit. So with the help of visiting friends we cleared the site of greenery both in front of the house ...
